Paper I-Library and Society

Objectives
  • To analyse the relationship between libraries and society in the information age, including National policies.
  • To analyse the multi-dimensional role of the library as information analysis centres, data centres, translation banks, etc.
  • To analyse the contemporary library scene in India and bilateral and multilateral programmes with reference to India.

Paper II-Library Management

Objectives
  • To be familiar with principles and techniques of management eg. Planning, Organising, Human Resource Management, Marketing, Financial Management, Control, etc.
  • To understand their application to the management of libraries and information centres.

Paper III-Organisation of Information

Objectives
  • To appraise methods - Classification, Catalouging, Indexing, Abstracting - used in organisation of information.
  • To review the methods of physical organisation of carriers of information i.e. citation, bibliograhic entries, catalogue entries, etc.
  • To use information retrieval systems through appropriate search strategies.

Paper IV-Organisation of Information - Practicals

Objectives

To understand the concepts of :

  • Database Design - bibliographic and non - bibliographic (using CDS/ISIS)
  • Classification (using DDC latest edition)
  • Abstracting
  • Thesaurus construction
  • On-line Search
  • CD-ROM Search

Paper VI-Research Methodology

Objectives
  • To appreciate the value of research in Library and Information Science.
  • To understand the process from research design to research report writing.

Group B : Project Report

  • The project report shall be on an approved topic pertaining to Library science.
  • The presentation of Project Report shall be held on pre-determined day, and will be attended by faculty members of the Department.
