Syllabus of M.Sc. in Biotechnology, Postgraduate course in Biotechnology Syllabus of Mumbai University

The M. Sc. Part I syllabus consists of 4 theory papers and 4 practicals. The theory papers consist of the following heads of 80 lectures each:

  • Paper I: Chemistry of Biomolecules
  • Paper II: Microbiology and Immunology
  • Paper III: Molecular Biology and Genetic engineering
  • Paper IV: Biophysics and Advanced Analytical Techniques

The examination will be for 4 theory papers each of 75 marks and 3 hr duration, and 4 practicals of 5 hrs duration of 50 marks each.

The M. Sc. Part II syllabus consists of 4 theory papers and 2 practicals. The theory papers consist of the following heads of 90 lectures and 75 marks each of 3 hrs duration:

  • Paper V: Computational Biotechnology
  • Paper VI: Plant and Animal Biotechnology
  • Paper VII: Environmental Biotechnology
  • Paper VIII: Social and commercial aspects of Biotechnology

Practicals of 50 marks each of 5 hr duration:

Practical V: Biostatistics, Computer application and Bioinformatics

Practical VI: Tissue culture, Environmental and Industrial Biotechnology

In addition, each student shall perform a project carrying 100 marks. The project will be evaluated on the basis of the project dissertation and presentation.

THIRD YEAR B.Sc. Syllabus of Mumbai University

A) Students can offer four papers in any one of science subjects which were offered to him/her at the Second Year B.Sc.

B) One applied component subject is to be offered which has two theory papers and a practical.

The applied component subjects offered are as follows:

2) Physics: Electronic Instrumentation/Computer Science
3) Mathematics: Computer Programming & Systems Analysis
4) Statistics: Operations Research
5) Zoology: Fishery Biology
6) Botany: Horticulture & Gardening
7) Microbiology: Food production & Processing
8) Computer Sc.: Web Designing
9) Bio-technology: Fishery Biology & Horticulture

*** Students who have been allotted and accepted the subjects of Microbiology, Computer Science and Biotechnology at F.Y. B.Sc., are required to continue to study and opt for these subjects at their S.Y.B.Sc. and T.Y.B.Sc. examinations.

Each of the four papers from group A is of 100 marks with a practical of 50 marks each based on individual theory papers. The break up of marks for applied component papers from group B is as follows. Applied component paper I – theory – 60 practical – 40. Applied component paper II theory – 60 practical – 40. Total of A and B is 600 + 200 = 800. Note that the marks obtained by the candidate in the applied component will be taken into account for the award of class at the third year B.Sc. examination.

SECOND YEAR B.Sc. Syllabus of Mumbai University

One paper of Foundation Course Paper - II (Compulsory).

A student shall offer three papers each in any two
subjects which were offered to him/her at First year B.Sc.

For a subject in which practicals are not prescribed, each paper will carry 100 marks. Syllabus, marks for theory & practical etc. are subject to rules & regulations of the University of Mumbai.

Foundation Course Paper I (Compulsory)

A student shall offer any one group of three subjects mentioned below.

In each of the Science subjects there shall be two papers. Each paper, in which practicals are prescribed, comprises 60 marks theory & 40 marks practicals. In Mathematics, theory papers are of 90 marks while 10 marks are allotted for tutorial.

THIRD YEAR B.A. Syllabus of Mumbai University

If in F.Y. and S.Y. if a student has opted for either Economics, History, Philosophy or English (Ancillary) he may offer all 6 papers in that subjects for T.Y.B.A. However combinations of two subjects with 3 papers in each may also be pursued by the student. Preferences of up to three combinations may be indicated whilst submitting the pre admission form subjects and for subject combinations are offered based on merit of performance at examination preceding the class to which admission is applied for.
