Promotion rules for degree college students of the University of Mumbai have been relaxed.

The university's academic council decided to promote to the next year degree college arts and commerce students who have a maximum of four ATKTs (allowed to keep terms), thus doubling the number of subjects a student can fail in but yet be moved up to the next class. The decision was taken because it was felt that under the new semester pattern, students were studying for 14 papers instead of seven under the earlier annual system.

Dean of commerce Madhu Nair said, "There was a need to maintain equivalence in the ATKT rules between the earlier system and the new semester pattern." In case of science, a student who fails in three courses in each semester 1 and 2, can be promoted to the third semester. The final result of semester VI will be kept in abeyance until the student passes each of the semesters. tnnAlso, performance of all the six semesters will be reflected in the final-year score card.
